The South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) has urged the authorities in Serbia to investigate recent attacks on journalists and bring those responsible to justice in a bid to ensure that violence against members of the media does not continue to grow.
SEEMO made the call following the second firebomb attack on journalists’ homes in recent weeks.
The first Molotov cocktail was thrown at the home of Damir Dragic, the director of Belgrade-based daily newspaper, Informer, on October 16. Although noone was injured in the attack, the family’s car was gutted by the fire.
The second attack was directed at TV presenter Biljana Vujovic on October 23. The firebomb landed outside the TV Kopernikus presenter’s home, and he managed to extinguish the fire before it spread.
Oliver Vujovic, secretary general of SEEMO said: “If police do not find the perpetrators and bring them to justice, it will likely be assumed that attacks against journalists will simply go unpunished, as it has often happened in the past.”
“I urge the Serbian police to investigate this and previous assaults on journalists and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
