Under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani,  the 29th  edition of the Doha International Book Fair kicks off today at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC), next to the City Center mall, Doha.  The opening  was attended this morning by H.E Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmud, Chairman of Qatar’s Consultative Assembly, H.E. Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser al-Ali, Minister of Culture and Sports and H.E. Ghaith bin Mubarak Al Kuwari , Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs; in addition to a  number of heads of accredited diplomatic missions, and Academic and Media representatives.

The Doha Centre for Media Freedom  (DCMF)participates in the 29th edition of the Doha International Book Fair that is open to public until  8 December;  during this period, DCMF presents its publications and media releases and organizes various activities and events, as well as workshops for school students and visitors.

The Centre’s participation is an opportunity to inform the public of its mission in promoting media freedom and introduce its efforts in supporting journalistic values, in addition to communicating and interacting with  visitors and school students about various media issues.

Russia is the guest of honor of the this year’s exhibition as the culmination of the cultural year Qatar-Russia 2018 Country.

Under the theme “Doha, A City of Knowledge and Conscience”,  the 29th  edition of the Doha International Book Fair is held under the supervision of the Qatar Cultural and Heritage Events Centre of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.   It is characterised by the participation of 30 Arab and foreign publishers, with 427 publishing houses.  The exhibition area, this year  is over 29,000sq m.
The number of booked stalls at the fair amounted to 791.  The 2018  book fair includes 101,992 titles in Arabic and 17,261 titles in other languages.

A number of ministries and government institutions, namely, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, Police College, National Human Rights Committee of Qatar (NHRC),Qatar University, Katara Prize for Arabic Novels, Qatar Museums, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies, are taking part in the fair.
The GCC countries participate in the framework of the exchange with the Gulf exhibitions.  There will be booths representing the Kuwaiti National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature as well as the Omani ministry of culture.  In addition to the remarkable participation of Ministries of Culture of Morocco, Palestine, Algeria and Turkey.  Spain will participate for the first time in the exhibition this year.

A number of embassies accredited to the State of Qatar, including that of the United States, France, Korea, Palestine and for the first time the Kyrgyz embassy are also present.

Various activities are taking place in this year’s edition including the cultural Cafes, theatres, workshops and art exhibitions.
