The booth of Doha Centre for Media Freedom has attracted a big number of visitors on the 29th edition of Doha International Book Fair through introducing the Centre’s efforts in promoting media freedom, presenting a number of activities to school students, holding meetings with academic and cultural figures from Qatar and abroad to discuss media and journalistic issues.
The Centre’s publications have attracted the attention of researchers and media professionals and human rights activists. They include data and research on various current media issues, such as the blockade and its implications on freedom of expression as well as spreading hate speech and fake news.
Students who visited the DCMF booth were highly interested with coloring activities and arranging mosaic pictures that introduced them to some ideas about media and journalism under the supervision of the DCMF Volunteer Team. Parents have reported satisfaction over the activities.
During the book fair, a series of interviews were held with visiting academic guests. Ms. Hanan Al Yafei, the content manager, met with Dr. Mohammed Cherkaoui, Lecturer at George Mason University, USA. The discussion covered a number of current media issues.
Yesterday, Prime Minister and Interior Minister H. E. Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani paid a visit to the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center for the 29th Doha International Book Fair. He toured the pavilions of the exhibition and was briefed on the participation of government departments, cultural sectors, Arab and international publishing houses, as well as the latest publications, books and manuscripts. He tweeted: “I was pleased to meet with a number of Qatari authors, Qatari and international publishers, I wish that they can enrich the cultural scene and wish them a bright future. ”
H.E. Prime Minister was impressed by the wide participation in the exhibition, stressing that the Doha Book Fair reflects the keenness of the State of Qatar and its interest in science and culture and in spreading knowledge.
In the presence of H.E. Minister of Culture and Sports Salah bin Ghanem Al-Ali and a number of Qatari writers and artists, the exhibition brought together the memory of the late artist Abdulaziz Nasser through the publication of the book ‘Abdulaziz Nasser: Journey of Love and Loyalty’ authored by Dr. Ahmed Abdul Malik. “Late Abdulaziz Nasser is a valuable figure , he is the composer of Qatar National anthem and the book is a symbolic gesture to pay tribute to this great artist” noted Mr. Faleh Al-Hajri, director of Research and cultural studies at the Ministry of Culture and Sport.
Tareq Mohammed Al-Suwaidan, the Kuwaiti writer organized an open meeting with the public stressing several current issues and challenges.
