A journalist was killed in Pakistan on Thursday as he reported on clashes between two factions of the ruling Awami League party in a northern district of the country according to police officials.

Abdul Hakim Shimul, a correspondent for Bangla daily Samakal was reporting on clashes between activists on Thursday a local police inspector explained.

“One group suddenly opened fire on the other when Shimul was shot,” the official said, adding that the journalist was hit by bullets in the head and the heart.

District police superintendent, Miraqquddin Ahmed noted that Shimul was taken to a local clinic before being transported to Dhaka for better treatment – although he did not survive the journey.

“He succumbed on the way to Dhaka as his condition worsened,” he said, adding “we are looking for the culprits.”
