Death toll of journalists in Gaza

During the recent escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, DCMF has documented the deaths of 17 journalists

As violence continues to claims lives in Israel and Palestine, Doha Centre for Media Freedom has been working with its sister organisation, Gaza Centre for Media Freedom, to document the violations committed against members of the press.

As a result of these monitoring efforts, DCMF has compiled a death toll of the journalists who have lost their lives as a result of their work.

This toll currently stands at 17.

DCMF repeats calls for the Israeli authorities to cease their aggression towards members of the press, and respect international standards of media freedom and human rights by enabling journalists to carry out their work and convey the reality of the situation on the  ground to the outside world.


1.     9/7/2014: Hamid Shihab, a driver working for Media24 news agency was killed when the vehicle of the agency was targeted near Al-Jundi al-Majhul Square in downtown Gaza.

2.     10/7/2014: Najhla Al-Haj, human rights and social media activist was killed with her family when her house was directly targeted without any warning by the Israeli warplanes in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip.

3.     20/7/2014: Journalist Khalid Hamad working for Continue Documentary Films Agency in Al-Shuja’iyah neighborhood was killed even though he was wearing press credentials.

4.     23/7/2014: Journalist Abdulrahman Abu-Hayyin was killed when the Israeli warplanes targeted his house in the heavy bombing of Al-Shuja’iyah neighborhood, eastern Gaza.

5.     29/7/2014: Journalist Baha Gharib, director of the Hebrew news in the state-run Falastin TV,  was killed in an Israeli airstrike.

6.     29/7/2014: Twenty-three year old journalist Izzat Dahir, who was a correspondent for Al-Hurriyah al-Ilamiyah network in Hebron was killed.

7.     30/7/2014: Ahid Zaqut, sports correspondent of Al-Kitab satellite channel, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Al-Nasr neighborhood, downtown Gaza.

8.     30/7/2014: Journalist Rami Rayyan, correspondent for the Siraj news website was killed when the Israeli occupation forces shelled Al-Shuja’iyah marketplace.

9.     30/7/2014: Samih Al-Arayyn, journalist in Al-Aqsa satellite channel, succumbed to his injuries which were caused by an airstrike on Al-Shuja’iyah marketplace.

10.   31/7/2104: Journalist Mohamad Dahir from Al-Risalah establishment succumbed to his injuries which were caused by an airstrike on Al-Shuja’iyah marketplace.

11.   1/8/2014: Journalist Abdullah Fahjan who was working for Sada al-Mala’ib and Al-Aqsa sports news websites was killed in Rafah city, southern Gaza Strip.

12.   3/8/2014: Independent Journalist Shadi Hamdi Ayyad was killed in a missile attack in Al-Zaytun neighborhood, eastern Gaza.

13.   3/8/2014: Muhammad Nur-Al-Din Al-Diri, cameraman of the Palestinian Network for Press and Media, was killed by the Israeli forces in Al-Shuja’iyah marketplace.

14.   4/8/2014 Journalist and director of the SAJA news agency, Hamada Khaled Maqqat, was killed in an Israeli bombardment on his house

15.   13/8/2014 Journalist Ali Abu Afash, who worked with the Gaza Centre for Media Freedom and Doha Centre for Media Freedom, was killed in a missile attack

16.   13/08/2014 AP journalist, Simone Camilli, was  killed in a missile attack

17.   25/08/2014 Freelance  and former Al Aqsa TV journalist, Abdullah Mortaja, was killed by tank fire.
